Steamboat gets ready for another big Storm

With an incredible early season base of 40 inches and 123 inches of snow so far this season, Steamboat keeps getting dumped on!

— Mount Werner and parts of Steamboat Ski Area are under a winter storm warning from noon today until 3 p.m. Saturday for a storm system expected to hit the higher elevations hardest while dropping only a couple of inches in town.

National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Frisbie said the storm is expected to shroud the upper reaches of Mount Werner in clouds through Saturday, with snow accumulations from 6 to 14 inches. Strong winds could accompany the storm, he said.

There is no winter storm warning or watch in effect for the city of Steamboat Springs.

“This is the type of system that drops the snow on the windward slopes of the mountain, and not a lot in town itself,” Frisbie said.

Depending on how the system develops as it nears Routt County, tonight could be the best chance for significant snowfall. Frisbie said he expects the snow to taper off during the day Saturday.

The mountains of northern Routt County could be hit hard, he said, with areas around Hahn’s Peak possibly seeing as much as 12 to 18 inches of snow.

Today’s high temperature in Steamboat is forecast at 36 degrees, with an overnight low of 21. Saturday’s high is expected to hover around the freezing mark, with an overnight low Saturday of 13 degrees.
