Steamboat Springs will receive international attention this month when the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, the most demanding bike race ever to be held in the U.S., stops in our town on the 26th and 27th of August. The race will feature 120 world-class riders and 16 international teams.
Those of you who have visited high elevation locations after living at lower levels know the difference it makes: up here there is less oxygen and the air is generally colder, a change that takes a toll. During this race the athletes will be competing at altitudes up to 2 miles high; Steamboat Springs, at a thousand feet higher than Denver, the “Mile-High City”, fits right in with the rest of the route.
After their stay at the end of Stage 4 on the 26th, Stage 5 on the 27th will have the racers continue up and over Rabbit Ears Pass—just outside of Steamboat—and on to Breckenridge. The roster includes Tour de France podium finishers, current national champions and 2011 major race champions.
A Community Open House with more information regarding the race will be held at Centennial Hall on the 15th from 6 to 7 p.m. Be sure to check out our Steamboat Springs Condo rentals for accommodations after the race.
